We are currently in the last week of Mahuru Māori (Māori Language Month) and Māori Language Week in Niu Tīrene (New Zealand). St Anne’s is fully supporting this movement as it can take a good month to make habits stick! Week long language weeks are fun and help bring awareness, but a month is for change.

The staff have been working hard doing:
Rūma 1/2: Star of the day does acknowledgement in Māori to the teachers and children (with support). Teacher to pao 3x times a day (call/sing in Māori to the children).
Rūma 3: Word of the week – as a challenge they can only use these new words in class (not the english word)
Rūma 4: Learn the Lord’s Prayer in Māori
Rūma 5: Pao 3x minimum a day by teacher or children, learn and use Māori instruments, hear stories in Māori.
Rūma 6: Morning routine to be in Māori only, including roll, greetings, prayer, acknowledgements, and some conversation practice.
Rūma 7: Acknowledging by memory, phrase a day from wall posters, learning Our Father and Apostles Creed by memory.
Rūma 8: Increasing conversational language, and the ability to acknowledge visitors, friends and staff.
Rūma 9: A traditional Māori story a week to explore and a word a day focus.
Dallas: More written use (i.e. newsletter, first language in all things  i.e. socials), more verbal use.
Sharyn (teacher aide): Using more Māori language through praise, welcomes, farewells and work in class.
Denise (teacher aide): Using more Māori language through praise, welcomes, farewells and work in class.
Amanda (ESOL): Using more Māori language through praise, welcomes, farewells and work in class.
Shelley (office manager): Using more Māori language through greeting, farewells and praise.  Do refresher study in downtime.
Maryse (Better Start Tier 2 support): Using a pao to help settle into seats ready for learning. A saying for each week to learn, and more general language like praise.

E WEHE ANA? / LEAVING?
We are currently forming classes for 2026 and also informing successful families of a place for new students. If you are heading overseas or know for some reason your child will not be back for 2026, please let us know now. Each year we have waitlists and giving these people warning can be very helpful. Also please note, due to our waitlists we cannot guarantee re-entry if you do take leave.

TALANOA 
We would like to extend an invite out to our parent community to gather with us and have a discussion about the naming of our new Samoan unit here at St Anne’s. Your contribution/participation is very important to our school as your family are part of this journey. Please start to think now and bring those ideas to inspire us. Once the talanoa has happened, the leadership will decide on a name and begin to design a logo with our designer. Hopefully, ready for 2026.

E TAU ANA I TŌ WAKA I TE HĀHI / PARKING AT THE CHURCH
A reminder that the priests have asked yet again to refrain from parking in the Church carparks at all times. In the morning, elderly use these parks to go to Mass.

HAERE AKE RĀ / GOODBYE
We had three outstanding kaiako whakangungu (student teachers) this term. We had Tamara Mana in Rūma 7, Bella-Marie Stills in Rūma 8 and Rebekah Bradbrook in Rūma 4. Whilst they come to continue to grow as a teacher, I would like to acknowledge the skills, talents and knowledge they brought to our school. Also, I would like to thank them for all the extras they did for our children, they definitely went above and beyond. They will be amazing teachers and we wish them well. We also congratulate Rebekah on the safe arrival of her second child last week.

We use the beginning of the new term as the time to wear hats again. Already the burn time is 50 minutes so please hunt these out over the holiday so they are ready for day one.

Three of our amazing students were part of a MMA interclub fundraiser for a boy called Chance, one of their teammates, who is fighting a rare form of cancer. They raised over $4000 at this event. Naz also made it onto the advertising for South Island Champs. Well done boys and let’s pray for Chance!

TE TORO A TE COURT THEATRE / COURT THEATRE VISIT
I rawe te haere mai a te Court Theatre ki Hato Ani mō te whakaatu reorua o Nuku me Vai. I whakaohoohotia, kā kōrero maha, kā ako maha hoki i roto i tō tātau kura.
It was great to have the Court Theatre in for their bilingual production of Nuku and Vai. It has inspired a lot of conversation and learning in our rooms.

What awesome day celebrating Onam with our St Anne’s Indian community. It was great to see our children celebrating, performing, playing games, singing and enjoying a feast. Thanks for inviting me!
