A reminder, if you ever want things translated word for word, most AI functions will do this well for Māori. Just copy the section, say ‘Translate this:’ and it will usually explain some of the language used to help you learn it. Try it with the above.

PINK SHIRT DAY AND ASCENSION / TE RĀ O TE TĪ-HĀTE MĀWHERO ME TE KAKENGA
Thanks to everyone who supported this kaupapa, Pink Shirt Day is about reducing bullying by celebrating diversity in all its forms and supporting schools, workplaces, and communities to be safe, supportive, welcoming, and inclusive. We hope all children feel welcome, supported, safe and included for what they bring at the school. If they don’t, please kōrero mai/tell us. Thanks to Henry Sharp of Room 3 for reminding us about it as we almost missed it. Thanks also to the Faith Team for the coin trail. Over $200 made. ‘Kōrero Atu’ means speak up or speak out (if something isn’t right).
We also celebrated Ascension which will happen on Sunday. In the photos below you will see Jesus being made into a kite and ascending to Heaven (unfortunately there was no wind today).

SECOND LANGUAGE SPEAKING FOCUS: STARS OF THE WEEK (LAST WEEK) / AROKA KŌRERO: KĀ WHETŪ O TE WIKI (I TĒRĀ WIKI)
Speaking of ‘Stars of the Week’, here are the stars of last week. The term focus is second language conversational use. REPLYING in the second (or third) language (Māori or Sāmoan) or exceptional conversational use will get your child noticed by teachers i.e. actively using the second language without prompting. These students have all been doing this week 3!
Room 1 – Aiesi for correctly responding to pēhea koe?” with a range of answers.
Vasega 10 – Leilia for extending herself using the sentence starter “Ou te fia…” and correctly adding in verbs, objects and descriptors without prompts or scaffolding. She is naturally using these in class when speaking, accepting/declining.
Room 2 – Finauga for correctly answering questions in Māori with a full sentence.
Rūma 3 – Christo Peter for using well-rehearsed sentences in conversations.
Rūma 4 – Jia for using and replying (clearly) in te reo Māori during mathematics this week.
Rūma 7 – Michelle for her joy of learning new phrases and excitement to use te reo Māori.
Room 5 – Aviana for her responses in Māori during class.
Rūma 8 – Jack for his excellent pronunciation of the vowels in our morning karakia Māori and for taking a risk in reciting the karakia in front of his peers.
Rūma 9 – Charlei for using Samoan at home and getting family involved. For also helping others speak Samoan in the class throughout each day.

TAONGA PUORO / MUSIC TREASURES
On Tuesday, a musical expert, Bob Bickerton, came to speak about and demonstrate Māori musical instruments to our children. We were honoured. Bob’s deep knowledge and captivating story telling had them listening intently the entire time. It was a wonderful day for the children.

Last week we participated in the Rugby Fun Day at Burnside Park. It was a great day with awesome students and aiga. Thanks heaps to all the whānau who came to support and help. Well done to the students who participated in this for the first time!

CROSS COUNTRY / OMATAHORA

SAVE THE WORLD GROUP (STWG) / RŌPŪ ‘WHAKAORATIA TE AO’
Last week Ethan, Nico, Archie and Henry cleaned up all the rubbish in the school grounds. We found two large buckets full of rubbish. Some of the things we found were dirty socks, a lunchbox and food. We were disappointed to see so much rubbish as we are a catholic school and we are a rubbish free school. Let’s try to not to bring rubbish in our lunchbox to school.

On Monday, we went through the locked gates (with Mr Wichman) behind Room 5 and Room 6 to the stream. For most of lunchtime we picked up rubbish at the stream. We found a total of one and a half large buckets of rubbish.

During that time, we found a gagaball stuck very high in a tree. Mr Wichman was super happy because I found it. It was one of his special balls. Nico used a very long stick while I was climbing up the tree. Eventually Nico poked the ball free.

BUILDING UPDATE / HAI MŌHIOHIO MŌ TE WHAKAHOU O KĀ RŪMA
Rough countdown for these two rooms. 4 weeks. Lights are in, doors are in, windows in, sound bats in, some of the ceiling and some jib is on. Things are starting to move quickly now.
Reminder: Room 4 will move to the library, and Rooms 3 and 5 to the Mission Centre  following the completion of Rooms 5 and 6  so that Rooms 3 and 4  can have a similar transformation. Room 9 and 10 will move into the refurbished rooms as the ‘Samoan Unit’.

PLEASE!!REMINDER OF SCHOOL HOURS / TĒNĀ, HE WHAKAMAUHARA TĒNEI O KĀ HAORA KURA
School is open from 8.30am – 3.15pm.  Students are still arriving as early as 8.00am and are not enrolled in Kidsbase.   We have requested this for some time now, and with the added risk of vehicles (for our building) entering and exiting freely outside these times it is particularly important.

A litter free lunch means no plastic wrap, no foil, no zip lock bags and no packages. Your child can still eat foods that come in packages but please take the food out of their wrappers and packages before putting them in your child’s lunchbox. Thank you for your support.
