LAST DAY OF THE TERM / TE RĀ WHAKAMUTUKA O TE WĀHAKA KURA
As you read in previous newsletters, Dean Isherwood, is being welcomed to his new school on Friday 3 July at 2pm. As many of the community want to be part of this, we are shutting school early (1pm) and would love for you to join us. Some children will be taken in our school vans to support Dean through singing at the pōwhiri (we will be in contact separately for this). Any families who would like to come and can, are welcome to. I just ask you to let me or Shelley know so we can advise Star of the Sea of numbers (for chairs and catering). shelley@stannes.co.nz or principal@stannes.co.nz
If your child is selected to go, they may be a little late back to school. ETA 3.15pm

For those unable to be picked up at 1pm, Kidsbase are open from 1pm to 6pm that day. Please enrol early as they have a max number. Note, this is a paid service but is cheap compared to most and are WINZ approved. https://kidsbase.co.nz/
Farewell at St Anne’s – We will have our own special farewell at 12pm. If students want to give gifts, this would be an appropriate time. This will finish at 1pm when children will be released to go home.

SKI TRIP / TIRIPI RETIRETI HUKAPAPA
A big mihi to the students who have already returned their Porter Heights Ski Trip information forms. We appreciate you getting these back promptly. The trip will take place on the 28th of July!
There are still a number of outstanding forms that need to be returned as soon as possible. We need to confirm our equipment rental numbers with the team at Porter Heights, so your prompt attention to this is greatly appreciated.
If your child doesn’t have waterproof clothing, we encourage you to ask family or friends if they have items that can be borrowed.
KOHI PŪTEA / FUNDRAISER
This year our students are in Sau Ia Fest and the prices for the performance have skyrocketed. We are looking for a little support to help with buses, uniform and entry costs. Please support us with a $2 non-uniform day this Tuesday 30 June (we encourage pasifika clothing due to the reason for the fundraiser but also don’t mind what is worn). We will also have a sausage sizzle on the day $2 each To be pre-ordered on Monday.
Please send all the money to your child’s classroom teacher. Sausages can be purchased through class teachers, who will tick students off on their class list.

Stars of the week this week were mainly for second language acquisition but also for other amazing things! Well done team!
Vasega10 – Ella for positive attitude in completing some difficult tasks in writing and reading in Sāmoan.
Vasega 9 – Sarai for forming her Sāmoan sentences independently.
Rūma 3 – Henry for his effort in all areas.
Room 1 – Charlee for joining in mat time to practice her reo with te huarere me te wātaka (weather and the calendar).
Rūma 7 – Elizabeth for her confidence to always give it a go speaking te reo Maori.
Room 5 – Fiona for her effort in all areas.
Room 5 – Xander for his effort in unassisted mihi (thanking), and being a tuakana.

MATARIKI CELEBRATIONS / WHAKANUI MATARIKI
Matariki will be celebrated in each class differently and throughout the last week of the term. Teachers all have different ideas and we hope your child enjoys them. Students who are in bilingual rooms will be doing a little more as experiencing culture and language together is important for understanding.
-Rooms 7 and 8 will have a sleep over with bilingual activities happening throughout. This will be on Wednesday 1 July at 5pm (note change in time from initial letter home)
-Rooms 3 and 4 will attend Matariki breakfast, served to them bilingually by the Rooms 7 and 8 at 7.30am on Thursday 2 July.
RUBBISH / RĀPIHI
Room 10 (senior Samoan room) is getting fed up (like us) with the rubbish again. Reminder, we are a waste free school!!!!
MANU KŌRERO SPEECH COMPETITION
A small group of students from our bilingual rooms were taken to watch some of the Manu Kōrero competition held at Hagley College. We made it to see Issy Wichman, an ex-student of the school, who represented Burnside High School in the junior section. She placed 5th, Burnside’s best ever placing. Schools may enter only one student per category so often there are competitions at schools to make it to this event. As Māori is the focus there, students of Māori descent choose whether they speak in Māori or English (because often it isn’t their fault they may not be able to speak Māori, more the system and the effect of intergenerational language loss), those of non-NZ Māori descent MUST speak in Māori to be in the competition, otherwise it would be just like any other english based speaking competition. Issy, not of NZ Māori descent spoke for 10minutes in te reo Māori. We hope our Māori and non-Māori students give this a go like her in year 9, 10, 11, 12 and/or 13.
